Assessment & Selection

The 2024 RAND framework is basically AFSOC writing down what they’ve been moving toward for a while now: judging people on more than just how fit they are. Candidates get scored on six things. Physical means strength, endurance, and being okay in the water while tired and carrying a bunch of gear. Mental means how you think and make decisions when your stressed out. Technical is how fast you can learn the special skills the job needs. Leadership is whether you can step up and lead other people when everything is chaos. Character is being honest and not quiting when quitting would be way easier. teamwork is putting the group ahead of yourself. They go through different phases that include long rucks (basically hiking with heavy backpacks), swim tests, problem-solving stuff, leadership situations, and instructors watching them the whole time. Most people don’t finish, and the point isn’t to break them — it’s to find the ones who can still make smart choices when they’re exhausted, freezing, and not sure of themselves.
